THE LYBL “BUY LOCAL” SERIES: The Quiet Power of Choosing with Care
Have you ever stopped mid-scroll on an online store and thought: "But who actually made this?" We have. A lot. And honestly, it's one of the questions that started this whole thing.
See, the LYBL story began one evening with our Audi (that's mom in the mother-daughter duo), a lapful of fine wool, and a king-size throw that grew slowly beneath very patient hands. There was no factory. No conveyor belt. No rush order from overseas. Just one woman, her needles, and the kind of quiet determination that turns an evening project into something beautiful enough to pass on to your grandchildren one day. That throw? You can find it right here in our shop, and yes, it's still as glorious as the first one she made… although now we’ve teamed up with a few more diligent local knitters, right here at home.
Behind every handmade piece is a story unfolding
That feeling of creating something extraordinary with your own two hands is what drives every maker we work with at LYBL Studio. And when you choose to buy from them, something beautiful happens (besides the obvious: you end up with a stunning piece for your home!).
Every Rand you spend locally circulates three to five times more within a community than money spent with big retailers or on imports. Three to five times! That’s not just us being sentimental – local banks say so too. That's your neighbour keeping her workshop open. That's a young artist affording to keep practising her craft. That's a mother and daughter (hello, that's us!) building something meaningful together, one hand-knitted row at a time.
The slower choice is often the better one.
We're not going to pretend buying local is always the easy choice. It's not the one-click, arrives-tomorrow, wrapped-in-plastic option. But here's what it is: it's the choice that means something. It's knowing that the person who made your throw cared about every single stitch. It's choosing provenance over convenience, patience over speed, and honestly? It's choosing something that won't fall apart after two winters (looking at you, mass-produced fleece blankets).
Luxury is not loud. Neither is community
At LYBL, we take this one step further – beyond that original throw. Every piece in our boutique is more than a product: it's a collectible. We're talking high-end, handmade treasures created with the finest materials and the kind of care you can actually feel when you run your hand across them. These aren't "nice for now" items. They're aspirational, artisanal works designed to be cherished for a lifetime and maybe even fought over in the will one day (we're only half joking).
So, the next time you're looking for something beautiful for your home, or for that person who already has everything, ask yourself: where did it come from? Whose hands shaped it? What story does it carry?
And then pop over to our shop and let us introduce you to something truly extraordinary. Something local. Something handmade. Something proudly South African, with a story worth telling.
Because luxury doesn't have to be loud, and neither does community. Both are built slowly, with intention, from honest materials and honest choices. Some pieces are aspirational, yes — the kind you might need to save for, wait for, and choose with real consideration. But that is exactly what makes them meaningful. Right here at home. Right here in South Africa. Right here at LYBL.
